Earlier Sunday, the woman’s condition had been described by Montreal police spokespeople Véronique Comtois and Gabriella Youakim as critical.

The woman sustained several stab wounds to the upper body in what police described Sunday afternoon as an attempted murder. The event took place outdoors on de Maisonneuve Blvd. at Roslyn Ave. at about 3:15 a.m

Officers with Westmount’s public security force patrolling the area witnessed the altercation, intervened, arrested the suspect and contacted 911, Youakim said.

The suspect remained in police custody Sunday and was due to be interviewed by investigators, she said.

The motive for the stabbing was not yet known and it was not yet clear whether the suspect and the victim knew each other.

But there were witnesses to the event, which unfolded outside a large de Maisonneuve Blvd. apartment building, Youakim said, and there is also security camera footage.

Earlier Sunday morning, two men were stabbed during an altercation on St-Denis St. in Montreal’s Ville-Marie borough.
