It looks like the Winnipeg Jets have begun conversations with other teams that could spark the speculated roster changes coming this summer. More specifically, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff explains that the Jets have begun to talk with other teams about the possibility of trading Blake Wheeler ahead of his full no-trade clause coming into effect on July 1.

After July 1, Wheeler would have to submit a five-team trade list that he would accept a trade to before he could be moved. It will be a lot easier if the Jets intend to trade him to do so in the next two weeks. Seravalli writes, “The early sense is Wheeler may be willing to consider a proposed destination that also is not on his list, if it’s a proper fit for his family and career.”
Wheeler, 36, has been the captain of the Jets for some time and one of the faces of the franchise for a few years now. Lately, he has been criticized for a lack of production and he scored just two goals through his first 30 games of this season. He ended the campaign with 17 goals and 60 points total in 65 games, which is certainly enough to warrant thinking there will be interest for him around the league. That said, his defensive numbers aren’t strong and many believe he can’t be relied upon as a two-way player.
Despite some of his deficiencies, Seravalli still thinks he’ll attract interest and notes, “Will his cap hit prove difficult to move? Maybe not. Wheeler could be the missing piece for a contending team as a point-per-game, play-driving winger with size and heart.” Wheeler currently makes $8.25 million per season with two more seasons left of his current deal.
Would there be any link between the hiring of Paul Maurice and Wheeler in Florida? It seems unlikely given the Panthers’ current cap situation.
