The Toronto Maple Leafs hosted the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night and things got a little nasty in the first period when Hurricanes defenseman Brendan Smith took out Leafs forward Ondrej Kase with a questionable hit. As Kase made his way to the bench, Wayne Simmonds hopped on the ice and took care of business.

The Leafs don’t have a ton of toughness but Simmonds is certainly their security blanket. He loves stepping up for teammates and you have to tip your cap to his level of competitiveness. 

This turned out to be one of the more entertaining fights in one of the more entertaining games of the year. Two elite teams going toe-to-toe, can’t beat it. Here’s the spirited scrap between Smith and Simmonds that started off a little interesting…
