Montreal police secure the entrance to a home where the city's eighth homicide of the year took place.

Police say they found the victim unconscious and injured after they responded to a noise complaint in the Ville-Marie borough around 9:30 p.m.

Resuscitation manoeuvres were performed, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s son, 28, was arrested soon after.

Vithushan Aran appeared before a judge Wednesday afternoon at the Montreal courthouse. He was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Visvilingam Aran. The 28-year-old man was ordered to remain detained and his case will return to court next week.

According to court records, the accused was charged with assault in 2013, but he settled the case by agreeing to sign a peace bond and follow a series of conditions.

“Circumstances and causes of the event are still being determined by investigators,” Montreal police spokesperson Gabriella Youakim said regarding Tuesday’s incident.

The killing is the eighth homicide recorded in Montreal this year.
