All of this happening with his Maple Leafs in what the general manager likes to call “win-now mode.”
It is win-now mode for the Leafs. It is also win-now mode for the Penguins and Capitals, for the Lighting and Panthers, for the Carolina Hurricanes, and just about everybody who is already in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The complications for Dubas, the young GM no more, are partially of his own creation, and more than that of areas of which he has had absolutely no control.
And that’s what makes it so difficult to assess the work done by the Leafs GM, who is in that win-a-playoff-round or lose-your-job kind of conversation, as unfair as that might be, even though that seems rather overwhelming considering the quality of team he has put together and the challenges now facing them.
