The Rangers are on the hunt for a winger right now, so it isn’t surprising to hear that they are now being linked to Olofsson. Although he shoots left, the 26-year-old is quite comfortable playing right wing. Thus, he has the potential to be a solid replacement for Sammy Blais in their lineup. Blais, unfortunately, has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign due to a torn ACL.
Olofsson is in the final year of his contract and will be a restricted free agent during the summer. Thus, if they do acquire him before the deadline passes, they would have team control over him during the offseason. This fact certainly can make him an even more appealing target.
In 42 games this season, Olofsson has seven goals, 17 assists, and a minus-20 rating. Overall, it’s been a bit of a down year for his standards, but he’s still been productive. However, he is two years removed from a 42-point campaign in 54 games, so he is capable of doing more. Perhaps a change of scenery to a much better Rangers team could help spark his game.
Nevertheless, this is something to keep an eye on as we get closer to the deadline.
