At the end of the year, Mark Scheifele told members of the Winnipeg media, “I have to think about my career and what’s going to be best for me. I have to talk to my agents and everyone in my family and stuff like that and figure out what I really want.” Those comments made it seem like Scheifele was seriously considering telling the Jets organization he’d like to be moved and speculation ramped up.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and the general manager of the Jets has said that Scheifele’s comments weren’t much more than a player being frustrated and noted that the entire team was likely annoyed at the way things went this season. Kevin Cheveldayoff added, that he didn’t think anyone should read too much into Scheifele’s comments.

Furthermore, Cheveldayoff said when asked about whether Scheifele would be back with the team next season, “Yeah, I do.” Cheveldayoff told Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com, “My exit interview with Mark went well. Again, it was an emotional time for everybody. We asked [our players] to wear their emotions in the exits, and I think they were very productive.”
Can both sides move on and be on the same page? That’s the question both Scheifele and the Jets will have to ask and answer this summer. Scheifele said, “It’s definitely a year I’ll try to forget a little bit,” he added. “It was a tough one from a lot of things – COVID, injuries, coach leaving, a new coach coming in, all that stuff.”
For the Jets, they need to figure out just how much change is right for their roster. Moving Scheifele would certainly shake things up and give them a chance to add a couple of different pieces. At the same time, by moving Scheifele, the team is likely moving the best player in any potential trade.
