One of the premier eSports events will be back in person this year.
According to multiple reports, the 2022 NHL Gaming World Championship will be held live and in-person this year, much to the delight of all involved. The GWC sees the best NHL 22 players on PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles compete against each other on their respective consoles. The championship be held at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft in Montreal on July 7.
A full breakdown of the event can be found here.
Returning to an in-person format is a sigh of relief for participants everywhere. As has been the case with many sporting events, the GWC has been forced to operate solely online for the past two years due to COVID-19, with the last in-person event taking place in 2020.
It’s fitting, then, that the game’s best players will gather for this edition of the GWC, given what’s on the line. For those participating, there is some serious money at stake.
The team that captures first place in the North American competition will be awarded a cash prize of $26,000 (USD). Second place comes in with a $10,000 prize, while the third and fourth place teams will receive $2,500, and fifth to eighth-place will walk away with $1,000 of their own.
A European champion will be declared on June 4 based on a similar tournament structure, without the in-person championship.
Online open play to determine which teams qualify for the event will begin on March 16 and stay open until March 27. From there, the top teams will then participate in the console finals from April 9 – May 28, with the victors, then earning a spot to the world championship in Montreal in July.
