Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Monday for a cross-check to the face of defenseman Mark Borowiecki of the Nashville Predators. It is likely Malkin will be suspended for at least one game after slashing Borowiecki and then hitting him in the jaw in a play that forced the defenseman out of the game and cost Malkin a double-minor penalty.

Malkin is facing discipline for the play some are calling one of the dirtier moves of the season. It came during the second period of the Penguins game against the Predators on Sunday and for fans who have seen it, it is clear Malkin was trying to hurt Borowieki. You can see the play below:

Malkin does have a history of fines on his NHL record and has been suspended in the past. Most believe the play will absolutely warrant a suspension. If the NHL looks at this play in conjunction with some of his intentionally dangerous stick work in the past and sees him as a repeat offender, he could get more than two games.

Responses are Mixed

While everyone seems to admit that the play by Malkin was dirty, the opinions as to what kind of player he is have been mixed on social media. Some are calling him one of the cheapest players in the game and a fake tough guy, while others are suggesting that he and his teammate Sidney Crosby have finally started fighting back after 15 years of being cheap-shotted by every agitator in the NHL.

Daniel Friedman wrote, “First Crosby, now Malkin. What is it with these guys? I really think the core of this Penguins team has been conditioned to believe it’s above the law over the past 15 years.” His argument seemed to be that these stars got away with everything and still think they will. Some have argued it’s time they push back.
