They signed 32-year-old Harri Sateri, who was on Finland’s surprise Olympic gold medal team in Beijing after his KHL club season ended. It’s not a lock as his one-year $750,000 US contract can be claimed on waivers before Monday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.
In a corresponding move, Mrazek and his three-year contract were put on waivers. Mrazek struggled after replacing the injured Jack Campbell, while Erik Kallgren has shown promise in three starts. If Sateri and Mrazek clear, it gives the Leafs a few playoff options as Campbell recovers from a rib injury.
The 6-foot-1 Sateri was originally a fourth-round pick of San Jose in 2008, though his nine games of NHL experience was with Florida in 2017-18.
The Leafs were likely kicking the tires on some goalies, but the most desired, such as Marc-Andre Fleury, would be costly.
Also placed on waivers Sunday was winger Kyle Clifford. Winger Nick Robertson, who does not require waivers, was placed with the Marlies. Toronto had Sunday off and practices at noon Monday.
