Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Ondrej Kase is assisted off the ice after suffering an apparent injury during the second period against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., March 19, 2022.

With a 6-3 loss in Nashville on Saturday night, after all their potential playoff foes made high-profile deals and winger Ondrej Kase suffered a head injury, general manager Kyle Dubas has a day and a half to counter.

Dubas remained holed up in Toronto for Saturday’s game, while the Leafs saw their two-game win streak with Erik Kallgren as their goalkeeping starter come to an end.

For defenceman Travis Dermott, in the home city of bittersweet country break-up songs, it was a possible farewell to his draft team. His name has come up in trade talk as much as his playing time has decreased.

“I love playing hockey, wherever that is, here or somewhere else” the GTA native said. “Whatever happens, happens, have fun and be the best player you can be. It’s the first time I’ve ever been in the talks, but that’s hockey. Good teams are built on competition within the group (many who’ve challenged Dermott the past few years).
