The Edmonton Oilers' celebrate a goal by Derek Ryan (10) during third period NHL action against the New Jersey Devils at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Saturday March 19, 2022. The Oilers won 6 to 3.

And, suddenly it looks like the Edmonton Oilers could set one.

OK. It’s not the one people were projecting back when the season started.

Back when the Oilers hit the one-quarter mark of the schedule there was a lot of loose talk about the potential of breaking Montreal’s record for single season power play production.

The Oilers power play, at one point, hit 50 per cent and was looking like it could beat the Canadians record power play percentage of 31.9 per cent from 1977-78.

Didn’t happen. The Oilers sat fourth in the league at 24.9 per cent going into the game Saturday and were 1-for-3 with the man advantage in their 6-3 Saturday afternoon win over the New Jersey Devils to complete a five-win, five-game home stand.

But with one quarter of the season remaining this occasionally cuckoo club could break an old Canadiens record after all — one that nobody in Edmonton was paying any attention to whatsoever.
