The Tampa Bay Lightning are happy to return home after a grueling 11-game road trip where they went 5-6 straight up and had two stretches where they lost three consecutive games.

Playing at Amalie Arena won’t be any easier, as they face the Eastern Conference leaders, Carolina Hurricanes, Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes have won the previous two meetings between these two sides this season, including a 3-2 victory at PNC Arena a week ago. The third, and final, game should be another close contest between the two playoff-bound teams.

Hurricanes vs Lightning picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline/Puck line analysis

The Carolina Hurricanes seem to have figured out the Tampa Bay Lightning. They have won both games this season, and are 4-1 against Tampa Bay in their last five regular-season meetings.

Tuesday’s contest comes just seven days after the Hurricanes defeated the Bolts, 3-2. The Lightning are the favorites for the game at -140, while Carolina is +120.

The regular-season success is a small measure of revenge for Carolina, who got eliminated from the playoffs last year by the Lightning, winning just one game in the best-of-seven series.

The Canes come into Amalie Arena winners of their last four, including a 6-1 beatdown Monday night on the Washington Capitals. That victory came at a price, however, as fourth-line center, Jesperi Kotkaniemi took a vicious hit with 1.8 seconds remaining and head coach Rod Brind’Amour said he is out for Tuesday.

This game has high playoff implications as Carolina sits atop the Eastern Conference by a point over the Florida Panthers and the Lightning will look to improve on their current fifth-place seeding sitting just one point back of the Rangers.

Tampa Bay just completed a rough 11-game road trip but was able to win its final two games on the road.

However, those victories were against the New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings, two teams that are heading to the lottery rather than the postseason.

The Lightning haven’t beaten a team likely to make the postseason since a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators back on February 26. In fact, their record against teams with 80 or more points dating back to the beginning of the year is 3-8 SU and 0-7 against teams with a winning percentage above .600.

Prediction: Hurricanes ML (+120)

Over/Under analysis

These two teams are in the Top 10 in scoring, with the Hurricanes eighth in the league at 3.35 goals per game and the Lightning 10th in gpg at 3.28.

Tampa Bay’s socring is led by Steven Stamkos, who is tied for 18th in points in the NHL with 70 points (29 goals, 41 assists), and  Victor Hedman is tied for 37th in points with 63 (18 goals, 45 assists).

Carolina’s Sebastian Aho is tied for 27th in points with 65 points (29 goals, 36 assists), and Andrei Svechnikov is tied for 49th in points with 58 (25 goals, 33 assists).

Despite the offensive production, these teams play tight when they get together. In the two previous games this season, the Under has hit both times. In the last 10 times they faced each other, the total of six goals has only been reached twice.

A big reason for that is defense. The Canes are tops in the league in goals against per game at 2.35 while the Lightning are 2.74. Carolina is second in save percentage at .921, while Tampa Bay sits seventh at .915.

Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen leads the league with a  GAA at 2.05 and is second in SV% at .927. Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is seventh with a 2.36 GAA and ninth with a  .920 SV%. Expect these netminders to help this game go Under.

Prediction: Under 5.5 (+100)

Best bet

Teuvo Teravainen has been on a tear lately with assists in his last four games, and six apples over that same span.

Teravainen had two assists in four of those games, as well as one in the Hurricane’s victory over the Lightning a week ago.

The 27-year-old leads the team with 37 helpers and is tied for 40th in the league.

Playing on the first line with the team’s goal-scoring leader, Sebastian Aho, has certainly helped his assist total. Also, being on the first line of the power-play unit and penalty kill gives him additional ice time, thus more opportunities for an assist.

Tuesday’s game against the Lightning should be a low-scoring affair, but Teravainen has thrived in that situation before and should do so again tonight

Pick: Teravainen Over 0.5 assists (+114)
