Boston’s Taylor Hall has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Roughing Toronto’s Ilya Lyubushkin. It’s not a decision many hockey fans are terribly pleased with — with the exception of maybe Boston Bruins fans — and some have gone so far as to suggest the decision by Hall had shades of Todd Bertuzzi in it.

Taylor Hall sucker punches Ilya Lyubushkin. Hall got 2-minutes for roughing on the play.

Suspension, fine, or nothing?

Reactions to the hit on Hall (most believe it was clean), the punch that followed in retaliation and the fine have been mixed. Some are saying that Hall wasn’t much different than any other player who got heated and retaliated, but that essentially ZERO repercussions (which is what a $5000 fine is for a player making what Hall is making) for blind-siding a guy from behind is outrageous.

Many are saying this should come as no surprise that Hall would be involved in something like this. While he doesn’t have a long history of suspensions, he does have a bit of a reputation for being less-than responsible with his play and he’s developed a bit of a reputation for being a hard player to have on a team. He was rumored to have worked himself out of Edmonton — the narrative on that whole situation is unclear — and he didn’t always have five-star stops in New Jersey, Buffalo, and Arizona.

Others have suggested that Maple Leafs’ fans are really over-reaching with how egregious this play actually was. Toronto is a team that is often extensively covered in Canada and has a huge fan base. But, they are also a team that if you don’t cheer for the Maple Leafs, you tend to hate them. As such, reactions from the very loyal fan base in Toronto tend to get a bit carried away.

What do you think? We can all agree that at $5K fines means absolutely nothing, but should Taylor Hall have been suspended, or was his punch not as bad as some are making it out to be?
