Montreal police said the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. The child was walking along Tricentenaire Blvd. near Victoria St. with another young girl when she was assaulted. Her attacker struck her repeatedly on the head and then dragged her for a short distance before bystanders intervened and called 911.

A witness who heard the girl cry ran over and intervened, pinning him to the ground and putting his foot on him to hold him there.

“He said to me: ‘call the cops, call the cops please,’ ” the man who did not wish to be identified told TVA Nouvelles. “When police came, I saw him smile.”

Tanvir Singh, 21, a resident of Anjou, was taken into custody by Montreal police who were patrolling the area. He faces four charges: assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, carrying a weapon in a dangerous manner and assault that left the victim disfigured or her life in danger.
