The San Jose Sharks have announced that general manager Doug Wilson will step down after 19 years as the team’s GM. He has not been on the job since November because of a medical condition and he’s going to be taking some time away from the game to focus on his health.

Wilson said in a statement:

“These past 19 years serving as general manager of the San Jose Sharks have been a privilege and one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable periods of my life. I have been incredibly fortunate to work for and with some of the most talented and passionate people in the game of hockey.

He thanked the owners, coaches, players, scouts, trainers, and members of the hockey department, as well as the tremendous fans for their support. He also noted that his family was key in him staying on as long as he has. Their support and understanding are why he was able to serve as the GM for 19 years.

Wilson was responsible for playing for names like Joe Thornton, Dan Boyle, Dany Heatley, Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson. Some deals have worked out better than others but he was never afraid to take a big swing. He also was the man at the helm when the organization drafted names like Milan Michalek, Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, and Timo Meier.

It has only been in the last couple of seasons as the team lost some big names that they’ve not been among the strongest of contenders in the NHL. The club is undergoing a retool of sorts and it will have to be someone else who ushers in the new era.

Who Becomes New GM?

Ownership has said they will immediately begin the external search for a new GM. Joe Will is going to serve as interim GM, and while there is no set timeline to hire a new manager, there are a few candidates that will likely get early consideration.
