Barrett Hayton, Anton Stralman, Nick Ritchie, Lawson Crouse, Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz (empty-netter) scored for the Coyotes, who are 6-1-0 in their last seven games.

Cole Caufield scored twice and Laurent Dauphin had one goal for the Canadiens, who are 8-6-1 since St. Louis took over from Dominique Ducharme as head coach.

Things got off to a bad start for the Canadiens when Hayton opened the scoring at 1:57 of the first period and got worse when Stralman made it 2-0 at 3:52. Canadiens defenceman Jeff Petry looked bad on both goals on a night when Ben Chiarot was scratched from the lineup to keep him healthy ahead of next Monday’s NHL trade deadline. Forward Josh Anderson was also scratched because of a lower-body injury.
