Edmonton’s Darnell Nurse will have a hearing today for Head-butting Los Angeles’ Phillip Danault, writes the NHL Department of Player Safety in a tweet on Wednesday. The play came in Game 5 when the two were jostling in front of the Oilers’ net and while the play wasn’t assessed a penalty on the ice, it’s clear Nurse did head-butt Danault and many believe he could be given a suspension for the move.

It was a poor decision by Nurse and it comes at an incredibly bad time as the Oilers are now down 3-2 in their first-round series with the Kings. Edmonton will have to travel to Los Angeles and could be eliminated if they don’t find a way to win one and bring the series back to Rogers Place in Edmonton.
Nurse is the team’s big minute guy –he played 26:23 on Tuesday — and if he’s out for Game 6, or heaven forbid even longer, that’s a huge loss for the Oilers who will need him in the lineup. There is a history of suspension for this type of play in the NHL and Nurse has been suspended once in his career for serving as the aggressor in a fight with then-San Jose Sharks defenceman Roman Polak in 2016.
