Calgary Flames Blake Coleman, Andrew Mangiapane and Mikael Backlund celebrate Mangiapane’s goal on Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger during game 5 of Stanley Cup playoff action in Calgary on Wednesday, May 11, 2022.

Andrew Mangiapane got the primary assist.

It might have been Blake Coleman who made the whole thing happen, though.

The Calgary Flames were down 1-0 early in the third period of Wednesday night’s pivotal Game 5 showdown with the Dallas Stars and they needed something special to turn the game on its head.

Watch the replay. It’s Coleman who picks up a head-of-steam in the neutral zone. He takes the puck and drives hard to the net. As he breaks through the Stars’ zone, he puts the puck on his backhand and draws two defencemen towards him. They follow him as he flicks a puck on Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger and then goes to the back of the net.

In that moment, space opens up for Mangiapane, who grabs the puck, hesitates and then feeds the puck to Backlund for the game-tying goal.
