The new hockey operations department pulled the trigger on two deals Sunday afternoon by first sending defenceman Travis Hamonic to the Ottawa Senators for a 2022 third-round draft pick. That pick actually belonged to Vancouver in the first place, as it was sent to Vegas in exchange for Nate Schmidt in 2020 and then acquired by Ottawa in a subsequent trade with the Golden Knights

The Canucks then sent a separate third pick in 2022 — which they had acquired from Winnipeg in a deal for Schmidt last year — to the Toronto Maple Leafs to acquire depth defenceman Travis Dermott. The 25-year-old has five points (1-4) in 25 NHL games this season. He can play either side and has another year left at a US$1.5 million salary cap hit.
