That was the tricky daily-double ticket the Vancouver Canucks hoped to punch Tuesday to prolong their magical mystery tour and qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
They had to beat the upset-minded Seattle Kraken at Rogers Arena and have the Dallas Stars lose in regulation to the visiting Golden Knights.
The Stars needed a single point to get to 94 points — one more than the Canucks could collect with three-straight wins to close out the regular season — and at 8:10 p.m. Pacific, that Vancouver ticket was ripped to shreds.
The Stars rallied to get to overtime and won 3-2 in a shootout. Somebody must have seen the result on a tablet at the bench. The Canucks went from a 3-0 domination to being outshot 16-2 in the second period where they took five penalties, to finally claiming a 5-2 win — knowing they were mathematically eliminated from playing in May.
