The Montreal Canadiens continue to round out their front office staff in the wake of Jeff Gorton’s arrival.

Gorton made yet another move to shore up his supporting ranks on Wednesday afternoon, promoting longtime executive John Sedgwick to the role of assistant GM.

This is yet another bump up the Habs’ corporate hierarchy for Sedgwick in his lengthy tenure with the club. Sedgwick originally joined the Canadiens organization as the team’s director of legal affairs back in 2013, eventually seeing his title elevated to that of vice president of hockey operations and legal affairs in July of 2017.

In his role, Sedgwick’s primary duties are to handle contract negotiations with players, oversee the salary cap on a day-to-day basis, and govern all pertinent aspects of the collective bargaining agreement signed between the NHL and NHLPA.

Sedgwick is one of the few front office members to survive the organization’s complete teardown that came about back in November when the Canadiens parted ways with GM Marc Bergevin, assistant GM Trevor Timmins, and senior vice president of public affairs Paul Wilson all on the same day.

Now, after mere months of working under Gorton, Sedwick has seen his role and responsibilities grow. He must have made a good impression.

Sedgwick also played a central role in establishing the Canadiens’ two minor league affiliates over the years, which have served as vital rungs of their organization. He was a primary figure behind the installment of the Laval Rocket franchise in the AHL before serving as the team’s principal governor and helped establish the Trois-Rivieres Lions in the ECHL this past year, too.

Prior to joining the Canadiens, Sedgwick worked for the NHL from 2006-2013, serving as a member of the league’s hockey operations department that is centered in Toronto, Ontario.
