There’s also no guarantee he won’t be back in Montreal next season.

Petry has made it clear to Canadiens management that he wants to be traded. He has struggled on the ice this season — especially when Dominique Ducharme was still head coach — and his wife got fed up with Quebec’s strict COVID-19 restrictions and decided to stay at the family home in Michigan this season. The Petrys have three young sons and Julie is pregnant with a fourth boy.

The problem is that the 34-year-old Petry is in the first season of a four-year, US$25-million contract with an annual salary-cap hit of $6.25 million.

Heading into Monday night’s game against the Boston Bruins, Petry had 4-12-16 totals and was minus-8 in 55 games. That’s a big drop from last season, when Petry had 12-30-42 totals in 55 games and was plus-6.
