The Montreal Canadiens continue their hiring spree of late to shape their new-look front office.

The Canadiens announced two new hires to their hockey operations staff on Friday morning, adding Nick Bobrov as the organization’s co-director of amateur scouting, and former NHLer Vincent Lecavalier as special advisor to hockey operations.

According to the team, Bobrov will work with fellow co-director of amateur scouting Martin Lapointe, who was promoted to the position after Trevor Timmins was let go earlier this season.

It’s a role that Bobrov is seemingly quite suited for. the Russian-native brings an extensive scouting resume to a Canadiens organization that has struggled to develop NHL talent entirely over the past several years, having served as director of European scouting for the New York Rangers from 2015-2021, and for the Boston Bruins from 2001-2006.

Interestingly, both of Bobrov’s prior tenures with NHL organizations happened to coincide with those of Canadiens president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton, with today’s hiring clearly showing Gorton’s affinity for Bobrov’s work.

Lecavalier, of course, is known most prominently for his 17-year career in the NHL, during which he was a first-overall pick of the Lightning before proceeding to rack up a whopping 949 points with Tampa Bay, the Philadelphia Flyers, and Los Angeles Kings, as well.

It’s likely not a coincidence that Lecavalier will now be reunited with his longtime teammate Martin St. Louis, who was named Canadiens head coach last week, in his new role. Notably, the two played parts of 12 seasons together with the Lightning throughout their careers, establishing hockey in the Sunshine State and winning the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup in 2004.

Mere months after taking the organizational reins, Gorton seems to be rounding out a completely revamped hockey operations staff that he assuredly hopes will lead to brighter days ahead.

Only time will tell. But, the early returns look encouraging.
