Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes met with the media to discuss the Shea Weber for Evgenii Dadonov trade that was completed on Thursday. A salary cap move that helps the Canadiens with their LTIR situation, but also helps the Vegas Golden Knights relieve them of some of their cap issues, the Canadiens added a top-six forward while taking care of some financial business. The question remains, what other business will the Canadiens attend to this summer?

The team is hosting and the NHL draft this year and will select first overall. Among the rumored moves the team might make around the draft are a couple of trades. Among the names out there are defenseman Jeff Petry and forward Josh Anderson. Hughes was asked about both players during his media availability.

Josh Anderson Jeff Petry trade

When asked if there was any truth to potential Anderson trade rumors, Hughes didn’t shy away from the speculation saying the team was getting a number of calls about the forward. He isn’t actively shopping Anderson, but he is listening to offers and will do what’s best for the team. He said the phone has started to ring more often and he believes calls will pick up.

As for whether the Oilers — a team who has been rumored to be connected to the Anderson speculation — have called, that was not addressed. Montreal Hockey Now’s Marco D’Amico cited Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman’s telling Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer that he considers Anderson a hot commodity in the trade market and the fact Hughes noted he’s received many calls seems to confirm Stauffer’s report.

What About Petry?

As for the status of a Jeff Petry trade, Hughes said, “There is no imminent transaction.” He added, “But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen before the draft.” Petry has been in the trade rumor mill since the middle of this past season when it was made clear to Canadiens management that he might prefer being moved to another destination.

A formal trade request has been denied by the player, but a move is still expected.
