It wasn’t going to happen this season thanks to the fact he wasn’t moved ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline, but there was still some thought that the Boston Bruins would be open to trading forward Jake DeBrusk this offseason. That is until DeBrusk got hot and his two-year, $4 million per season contract extension started looking like a bargain.
DeBrusk has not rescinded a trade request he made with the Bruins earlier this season. Despite his success and the fact the Bruins are a playoff-bound franchise, he’d still like to move on. The only issue now, DeBrusk is on fire. He’s scored goals in each of the past five games and he’s on pace for 25 goals this season. Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic writes, “unless things tumble off the tracks for DeBrusk in the playoffs, expect him to be a Bruin in 2022-23.” He adds, “If that is something the 2015 first-rounder finds disagreeable, he can do little about it because of the contract he signed.”
Jake DeBrusk Bruins trade talk
Should the Bruins not trade DeBrusk, one of two things will have to happen. They’ll either have to hope he learns to love playing in Boston again or they move him at a later date. Their unwillingness to trade him and then their move to sign him to a two-year deal under false pretenses that would help increase his trade value won’t sit well. It’s unlikely he’d stick around after this two-year deal expires if the Bruins give up trying to accommodate his request.
Bruins Perspective is Understandable
DeBrusk has to know that he took a risk extending with the team this season. If he were to catch fire and play well, he’d make himself attractive to other teams, but the Bruins would also want to hang onto him for their playoff run or be asking for a bigger return. Both things don’t get him moved right away.
The Bruins were never going to move DeBrusk simply to make him happy. They needed the right return and it wasn’t there. Now that they’ve stuck with him, they want him to perform as best he can when the games matter and he’s got a history of doing so.
As for what the offseason brings? The Bruins and DeBrusk can have another conversation at that time.
