In some developing news from the desert, the Arizona Coyotes are reportedly in talks to move to a 5000-seat arena for a few years as the team is working out a deal with Arizona State University. The deal is expected to be finalized in the very near future as the Coyotes will be using the school’s new multipurpose arena as a temporary home.

The Coyotes are planning on using ASU’s rink for all their home games while the franchise waits approval and construction of a permanent home in Tempe. There’s still lots to work out for the arena in Tempe but the team would prefer that to be their permanent home. Expectations are the deal will ASU will be for 3 years.

The NCAA is full of weird rules and apparently that includes for hockey facilities as they won’t let the Coyotes use ASU’s hockey areas, meaning they will be expected to build their own which is going to cost the team between $15 and $20 million according to Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports.

The Coyotes released a statement and had this to say:

As we have said many times, we are completely committed to building our future in Arizona. As part of that process, we are excited to be exploring some great temporary arena options here before we move in to a new permanent home in the Valley

The team is expected to get confirmation within the next few weeks and have everything signed off on by the NHL. ASU’s and the Coyotes new 5000-seat arena should be fully operational in the fall.
