Alex Ovechkin sustained an upper-body injury on Sunday versus the Toronto Maple Leafs and is listed as day-to-day. That’s the good news. The bad news is that he might miss some time, but that’s not entirely clear at this point.

Ovechkin did not return to the game after going awkwardly into the boards after goaltender Erik Kallgren stuck his stick in Ovechkin’s feet. While it looked like a careless (if not purposeful play) the netminder says he didn’t mean to trip Ovechkin or cause injury. It was clear Ovechkin was in pain. The 50-goal captain took some time to get to his feet, gave an earful to the officials, and went directly to the trainers’ room.

Sunday evening, Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said Ovechkin would need further evaluation. Monday morning, Ovechkin was on the ice for team photos. While being in full uniform and not sporting any sort of sling or cast appears to mean he has avoided serious injury, time will tell as to how quickly he’ll be back. The Capitals may choose to play this safely and not rush him back into the lineup.

As Samantha Pell of The Washington Post writes, “All things considered, Ovechkin seemed pretty normal. However, you can’t tell much with him in full uniform so hard to see how he’s actually doing.” She added, “Next time the Capitals are on the ice is Tuesday morning for their AM skate before NYI. No practice today.”

His teammate T.J. Oshie said, “We all hope he’s fine. I just talked to him, and I think he’ll be all right. It’s always scary seeing Big 8 go down and lay on the ice. He’s a tough guy.” He added, “I’ve never met anyone tougher than that guy.”
